Los Espookys

We interrupt our scary surgery posts with some scares of a little more traditional nature; a little celebration of Halloween in one of the spookiest cities in the world.

Thankfully that title is not literal and we were only playing Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) revelers.

We arrived in town just in time for NOLA’s halloween parade Krewe of Boo so we knew we wanted to take advantage of getting dressed up. Unfortunately, we didn’t take the real camera with us that night as we didn’t want to be lugging it around when parading and dancing and the dark iphone pics just weren’t cutting it.

We had so many people yelling congratulations to us as we walked by (um, on almost 20 years!? hee hee) and “stealthily” taking our picture.

Side note: we weren’t actually IN the parade as the by the time we learned about it, the deadline to ride had already passed. Boo. BUT, perhaps next year? But yea, we still wore sneakers since we knew we’d be walking around the Quarter a lot. Best. Decision. Ever.

I wore my actual wedding dress and Bill wore his tux that he used to wear for formal weddings. He got his awesome hat here in New Orleans (we added the silk red rose) and I picked up his red rose tie on Amazon. I also bought the black veil, black lace fan, and cameo necklace on Amazon. I removed the chain from the skeleton cameo and tied it with black velvet ribbon. I made the flower crown and my black bouquet. Jewels, nails and wig courtesy of Spirit Halloween. Fitbit courtesy of forgetting to take the stupid thing off before photos! Dur.

We hit up Krewe of Boo’s After Party for a little more revelry and had such a blast. More people wanted pictures of us or with us – it was crazy. Especially because our make up really wasn’t that great, but I guess we were workin’ it. Ha ha! Oh, and well, they might have been a tad over served, too, huh? Here are a couple that just barely made the cut.

It was the perfect way to spend what little pre-surgery time we had in the city, though and we’d definitely LOVE to ride on one of the floats sometime. #bucketlist

Not surprisingly, a few houses in the Garden District go all out with their decor. The Skeleton House is fun and pun central. The owner has been doing her display for years and she always tries to add several new and timely ones. Super impressive. Side question: where on earth do you get all those skeltons? Maybe I don’t want to know!

And Ghost Manor is spooktacular in the very best way. Singing skeletons, ghosts dancing from window to window and lightning affects from the house to the giant oak beside the house. It was packed so we couldn’t get many of the photos we would have wanted, but hopefully we’ve convinced you it’s a worth a stop if you’re ever lucky enough to find yourself in New Orleans around during spooky season.

Happy Halloween, y’all!
