Rewind: The Hospital Stay

Honestly, I don’t remember much from my time at the Shagri La Hospital that is St. Charles Surgical Hospital and what I did, I’ve already written about so I’ll mostly just let the photos speak for themselves..

Ordering breakfast and yes, I got dessert. I got dessert after every meal. Is anyone surprised? Apparently I wasn’t that out of it. Even though I really look it.
Getting me started on some physical therapy, but if you look close, my eyes are barely open. I remember telling her that she might want to demonstrate all the exercises, but don’t make me do all the exercise reps ’cause she was about to lose me to dream land. Pretty sure I was already “lost” at this point and she’s realizing I was right.
First time getting out of bed.
Can you tell it was super fun?
Thankfully my sweet nurse did most of the heavy lifting.
But still feeling pretty proud of myself.
The Hunch Back of St. Charles. Thankfully most of the other patients (the ones I saw anyway-did I mention how quiet it was even with a full house?!) were sporting similar posture. Our poor backs, though.
Doing my rounds.
Sweet reward for said rounds.
But now I’m too tired to figure out dinner. Still worth it.
Ten times every hour I had to suck in my breath and try and keep that little yellow square in the happy face. I hated that little happy face.
But I got over it pretty quick when I saw my healthy blood pressure reading.
Emptying my four drains. Seemed like we were always emptying my four drains.

[[ Insert shower day here, but unfortunately no pics because my personal photographer had to learn how to give me a shower (not letting the water directly hit my sutures, the proper way to drizzle the soapy water, etc., all while I can’t stand up). Also, this is a family blog so no, no shower pics. NO one wants to see those of Frankenbelly anyway. ]]

Joyce checking out the girls and I have no earthly idea what else is going on here.
But I do know that I did not like it.
Last day and getting ready to go “home”! But first another shower and a chance to feel slightly more human. Yea!
One last emptying of my four drains…
And IV removal.
Ready to go home at this point, but was honestly was also a little bummed. I knew I was going to miss my awesome St. Charles crew. And, of course, the Icee machine. But, seriously, mostly the crew.

Stay tuned for Rewind: The First Days at “Home”

  1. I thought I left a long comment but I don’t see it here. I don’t remember what I said! Your humor, pictures, bravery is just awesome. I hope at one point you will feel back to your regular self. It’s quite a long road isn’t it? I think we will be doing DIEP flaps every other week now. And thanks for the FB compliment. 😘

  2. Thank you so much, Stacy! It is definitely a long and winding road. It’s been incredibly helpful hearing from people like you and friends or friends who’ve had similar surgeries.

Hopefully you’ll be doing more DIEP’s because of explanting implants that were for breast augmentation and not because of mastectomies due to breast cancer or gene predisposition.

    xo…
