Last week, the day before my first “lovely” expanders fill, I decided it was high time to screw waiting for Bill to get home and that I wanted to take a walk to the lake NOW. So I did. 🙂 I took it slow and although I was definitely feeling it in my sternum on the walk home (I know, mastectomies are weird if you hadn’t already figured that out), I slowed down to a barely old lady stroll, but I MADE IT! Wanted a nap when I got home, but that’s beside the point. I had walked 1.21 miles, a whopping 122 steps with my average speed being 2.8mph in roughly 30 minutes, give or take according to Runtastic.
Now as you can see from the little video compilation above, my attempt at documenting said highlight of my day was a bit fraught. Also, a bit freakin’ hilarious. It was super windy so it may be hard to hear me, but what I was trying to say was “First solo walk to the lake. Whoo-hoo!”, but for some reason (thanks, narcotics – which I believe you hear me say on the 2nd attempt!) it kept coming out as “First solo lake to walk. Whoo-hoo!” The last and final “selfie” try, I actually thought I had finally gotten it right, but then I watched it back and well, you can see that I clearly had to remove myself from the video to actually get the words out correctly. It really is tough to be distracted by such beauty, clearly.
A friend told me it’s going to be the little milestones that help remind you that you really are healing and she was right. It was a simple thing, one most, including myself, definitely take for granted everyday, but that walk by myself, not having to hold onto anyone for balance (thanks, narcotics! I say that a lot don’t I? 😉 ) was most definitely a much needed, spirit lifting, victory. Onward and upward!
